5 January 2022
As we begin the spring term, I wanted to wish you all a happy New Year and to advise you of some likely changes to student’s classes later this term.
Bishop Challoner usually sets pupils into ability-based classes at the beginning of Year 7. However, given the disruption to students’ education since March 2020, and throughout Year 5 and Year 6, we introduced mixed-ability classes at the beginning of Year 7. Whilst we thought that ability-based classes at the beginning of Year 7 was inappropriate, we do believe it is now appropriate to introduce partial setting within the Year 7 curriculum. Subjects where partial setting will take place include:
· Mathematics
· Science
· Computing,
· French,
· Dramatic studies
· Music.
Other subjects will remain as mixed-ability classes for the remainder of Year 7.
Partial setting in the subjects listed above will begin after February half term. This is, however, subject to any further Covid disruptions. Please rest assured that these changes will encompass the robust data that we have collated, and they are not based on a single assessment. They are being introduced to ensure that all students continue to have the most appropriate support for their individual academic and holistic growth.
As a school, we are dedicated to providing the best education and support for our students. I would encourage all Year 7 pupils to continue working to the best of their ability, showing moral fibre, fortitude and focus in the classroom and around the school.
If you any questions regarding these changes, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.
Kind regards,
Ms J Beard
Head of Year 7
