Bishop Challoner Catholic College

Summer Transition Programme 2021

Bishop Challoner Catholic College will be hosting a summer transition programme for all Year 6 pupils who are starting school with us in September 2021. Due to COVID restrictions pupils have had limited opportunities to visit Bishop Challoner over the past 18 months with their primary school with many having missed out on numerous sporting, enriching and educational activities. This will now also extend to missing our two day induction programme which has also been cancelled due to COVID. Our summer school however will provide an invaluable opportunity for all our new pupils to experience a typical school week through a range of fun and exciting activities.

The main focus of the programme is to deliver a short summer school offering a blend of academic education and enrichment activities to help our young people to prepare for secondary school, to raise self-esteem and to ensure all pupils are looking forward to attending Bishop Challoner Catholic College. Each pupil will receive five days of engaging academic activities that will allow them to meet teachers and school staff, rehearse specific skills needed to access the secondary curriculum, and to become familiar with the school environment. There is no cost to parents/carers for their son/daughter to attend the programme as it is fully funded by the Department of Education.

Your son/daughter will take part in a wide range of activities and will include dance, computing/drones, music, science, numeracy and literacy. Pupils will experience day trips to the Snow Dome for ice skating and tobogganing, Birmingham City Centre for Bowling and Rock Climbing and will also spend a day at Drayton Manor. All school based activities will be delivered by staff and school trips will be supervised by staff from Bishop Challoner Catholic College including the Head of Year 7.

The summer school will be divided into two identical one week progammes with one hundred pupils accommodated on each week (Week 1: Monday 26th July – Friday 30th July / Week 2: Monday 2nd August – Friday 6th August). Each day will follow a normal five period school day allowing pupils to get used systems and movement around the school site. Registration would take place each morning between 8:30-8:40am and pupils would be dismissed at 3:10pm each day. We will provide extracurricular sporting clubs each morning from 8am-8:30am and each afternoon from 3:10pm–4pm. There will be sporting activities for the pupils to take part in everyday during lunch time. Pupils will receive an activity timetable once they have been registered. A typical week could look like the example below:

We ask that if you are interested in registering your son/daughter to take part in the programme then please complete and return the summer transition form in section 3 of the induction pack. The induction pack will be sent out early June. We would ask parents/carers to select the preferred week for their son/daughter, confirm if they will be attending the morning/after school clubs, and if they will be collected each day or can make their own way home once dismissed.

We will provide a cold lunch (sandwich, snack and drink) each day to all pupils registered as FSM. If this applies to your son/daughter then please tick the FSM option on the summer transition form and state any dietary requests or sandwich preference.

We very much hope you will take this opportunity up to register your son/daughter to take part in the summer programme. If you require further information please contact Miss Crump at the school reception or by emailing l.crump@bishopchalloner.bham.sch.uk

Kind Regards
