7 July 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

Character Week 13-17th July

Cardinal Vincent Nicholls once wrote “In a Catholic School, the true development of the person, pupils and staff, takes precedence over all other things”. Character Week is one way in which we support our pupils in their personal development, as creations of God.

Every July, our pupils participate in a week of Character Education sessions designed as part of our Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) programme. During this week, all other subject lessons stop and pupils reflect solely on their personal development as individuals, members of our community and global citizens. This year, our lessons have been tailored to reflect the current difficulties and issues impacting our local and global communities. These lessons are aimed at providing time for the ‘true development of the person’ through engaging, inspiring and informative resources. Where applicable, the resources signpost students to where they can find more information, support or advice.

In preparation for Character Week, the Religious Studies (RS) and PSHE department developed four cross-curricular lessons and delivered them as part of RS distance learning.  As a foundation for personal development these lessons included a connection to lockdown with a focus on; anxiety, showing love through social distancing, supporting the NHS and looking after your mental and physical wellbeing. The Character Week timetable builds on these tailored topics in more depth. This can be seen in the timetable below:

In order to facilitate such an important part of our pupils’ development, Character Week lessons will be provided on Class Charts and the ‘Online Work’ section of the Bishop Challoner website. The timetable above will replace the timetable that our key stage three pupils have been following. Thus, the timetable that our key stage three classes have been following since school closed will not apply.

Should pupils wish to share their work, have any questions or problems with the work set they may use this email address:  CW2020@bishopchalloner.bham.sch.uk

We thank you for your continued involvement and support in your child(ren)’s education as we endeavour to live out Cardinal Vincent Nicholls words.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs F Bisset
Head of PSHE
