BTEC Level 3: Extended Certificate in Performing Arts

This is a course equivalent to one A-level and is designed to develop your skills in the art forms of singing, dancing and acting.  In addition to the performing arts sector-specific content, this qualification will provide you with the opportunity to develop all-round performance skills and transferable skills such as self-confidence, self-presentation, personal discipline, time management and organisational skills which are highly regarded by higher education and employers.  You will be given the opportunity to work independently, in small groups and as part of a wider production company in response to given briefs and stimuli.  You will also have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and understanding of different Arts practitioners and how they convey meaning and intent to an audience. 

What will I learn?

The course is subdivided into four units (the first three are mandatory and the last one is chosen for you by the college):

1.Investigating Practitioners Work
In this unit you will investigate the work of performing arts practitioners and develop critical analysis skills and contextual understanding of how practitioners communicate themes in their work.

2.Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance
In this unit you will explore technical performance skills with a focus on developing skills and techniques in at least two performance styles.

3.Group Performance Workshop
In this unit you will explore and integrate creative, physical and vocal skills and techniques, working collaboratively to create a performance in response to a given stimulus.

4.  Musical Theatre Techniques
In this unit you will explore key features of musical theatre, developing specialist skills and techniques as a musical theatre performer combining acting, singing and dance skills for a performance.

How will I be assessed?

100% Coursework/Performance Work
Candidates will be set regular assignment briefs which will allow them to achieve a pass, merit or distinction.

This criteria broadly equates to the following:
Pass = E
Merit = C
Distinction = A
Distinction* = A*

Where might this course take me?

With this qualification you could go on to study to be a professional performer in any area of the arts, theatre production, backstage, choreographer, make-up artist, costume designer, director, prop maker, lighting designer, sound operator, script writer, events management etc.
