Year 9 GCSE PE Options
12 January 2018
Bishop Challoner PE department is pleased to inform you that Year 9 students will be undertaking a series of theoretical lessons in their scheduled lesson time. As the time for Options draws closer, we realise it is important for our students to be well informed about the content of the theory element of academic PE courses they may wish to choose. At Bishop Challoner we offer the OCR GCSE Physical Education course and the Edexcel BTEC Sport course. Both of these require a high percentage of theory content to be learnt, coupled with practical content.
PE theory content has been embedded in lessons since Year 7, but in order to effectively prepare our students for the examination theory content we feel it is important for them to be explicitly exposed to realistic lesson scenarios and course content. Thus, we have made the decision to provide all of Year 9 to be taught in the classroom in a total of 8 hours over the course of the Spring term by their regular timetabled PE teacher.
Research shows that the most effective ways to ensure we embed knowledge and make it ‘stick’ is through regular exposure to the required content, ideally in different contexts, such as practical and theory lessons.
The theory content will focus on components of fitness, fitness testing and fitness training. This knowledge is needed on the GCSE PE and BTEC Sport courses and we also feel that if an individual does not opt for either of these courses, then it is paramount knowledge for leading a healthy active lifestyle.
As a PE department we firmly believe that the opportunity to have classroom PE lessons will have a big influence in students deciding if an academic PE course in Year 10 and 11 is the right option for them. Teachers will be indicated to a child’s suitability based on knowledge and understanding of the topic, contributing positively in a classroom setting to a course based meeting homework deadlines which may be set and showing enthusiasm to learning.
It is important to note that students must bring their full PE kit to every lesson – regardless if they have been told it is theory.
